1. Pom Pom Flower Cards

What’s better than flowers? Handmade flowers!

Create a pom pom bouquet that lasts in a few simple steps to tie onto your Mother’s Day card.

First, start by lining a pipe cleaner next to a fork and wrapping yarn around both until there is a small bundle of yarn. Next, twist the pipe cleaner around the yarn to secure then slip the yarn off the fork. To open up the pom pom flower head, cut the bundle in half and fluff the petals.

To secure the flowers in place, push two small holes in the of the card. Next, use a pipe cleaner or string to tie the flowers to your card through the holes to finish.

2. Sticker Fun Cards

Stickers are fun to peel and stick but did you know they are also a fantastic way to practice pincer grasp and build fine motor skills? Choose stickers with special characters and shapes such as our Peel-And-Stick-On Gems for children to choose from.

Increase the challenge by starting with bigger stickers and then introducing smaller sizes which are harder to peel away from the backing paper. If you don’t have stickers to hand, try decorating masking tape with coloured pens to make your own DIY peel-away stickers.

What you’ll need: sticker assortment in different sizes, card.

3. Button Art Cards

Our first budget-friendly activity is a great way to reduce waste while inspiring children’s creativity by recycling odd buttons in different sizes.

Before you get started, it can be helpful to sort through the buttons by size or colour and sketch out the pattern first. Or if you have a more abstract design in mind, try freehanding by gathering together colourful buttons and glueing them straight onto card to create fun patterns and shapes.

For older children, try building on this activity by asking them to try spelling out words such as ‘Mum’.

What you’ll need: buttons, PVA glue, card.

4. Yarn Wrapped Cards

Unleash creativity in children as they express themselves by choosing different colours, textures and patterns to create a yarn-wrapped card, perfect for promoting bilateral skills.

As children create their designs through repeated weaving motions they will be able to refine their hand-eye coordination and strengthen small muscles in their hands and fingers.

What you’ll need: yarn, scissors, card

5. Free Download Tissue Paper Art Cards

Children can improve their scissor skills by carefully following the lines and folding the card to create their own blooming heart card that opens up to make a flower.

We turned our plain cardboard rolls into tulip flowers that can hold a special Mother’s Day message.

To make your own everlasting plants, press a cardboard roll flat and outline a flower shape to cut out. Once painted, leave to dry before adding a special message inside the centre or tying a handwritten note around the stem.

8. Sponge Painting Cards

Sponge painting activities make wonderful sensory experiences for young children as they explore the process of handling sponges and dipping them into paint to create different marks and shapes.

Cut sponges into different shapes and let children help to squeeze paint onto a tray to prepare for this activity. Encourage little ones to explore how to use their new paint tool as they squeeze and stamp on a card with paint and ask them questions to enhance communication like “What shape is your sponge, is the paint sticky, can you squeeze the sponge?”

Bubble wrap is fun to pop and easy to find in packages, making it a fun resource to recycle into DIY stamps.
