When you imagine a scientist, who do you think of? Chances are, you may think of someone who looks like Einstein with wild hair and a white lab coat. The reality is, scientists come from all walks of life and backgrounds. It is crucial to have diversity in STEAM fields to ensure that different perspectives and experiences are represented.

In today's rapidly advancing world, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) is more important than ever. It is critical that there is a diverse group of individuals working in these fields to ensure that the perspectives and experiences of all groups are represented and valued. However, diversity in STEAM fields is still lacking. It is important to take steps to promote inclusivity and encourage diverse individuals to pursue careers in these fields.

What is STEAM?

STEAM is an interdisciplinary approach to education. It integrates the arts with the traditional STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In previous years, educators at all levels have focused on Science, Maths, and Engineering. Recent studies demonstrate the importance of a more holistic approach to education including the Arts. The integration of creativity is key to a greater understanding of scientific subjects. The arts provide a creative and innovative perspective to these subjects. This leads to a more well-rounded education and a better understanding of how to apply these subjects in real-world situations. To read more about STEAM and how this is represented in early years' settings then head to our dedicated blog: STEAM in the early years.

Why is Diversity in STEAM important?

The goal of any early year’s educator is to spark curiosity in their students. To give them the confidence to pursue the field that they are interested in. All while maintaining a well-rounded education. Unfortunately, there is a prominent discrepancy between various social groups and the occupations they end up in because of a long-standing societal pressure for certain social groups to pursue a particular profession. Significantly more men are employed in engineering roles than women. Together, we are pushing to bridge those gaps. This change begins in childhood.

Diversity in STEAM fields is important for several reasons.

  • For one, it helps to promote a more inclusive and diverse workplace, which leads to better problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Exposure to diverse individuals and perspectives helps children to develop a tolerant and open-minded approach to the world around them.
  • Finally, encouraging diversity in STEAM can help to break down barriers and promote equality by providing equal opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds to pursue careers in these fields.

A diverse group of individuals working in STEAM can lead to better problem-solving, decision-making, and more innovative solutions. Additionally, having diversity in STEAM can break down barriers and promote equality by providing equal opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds to pursue careers in these fields. The importance of diversity in STEAM cannot be overstated, it creates an inclusive and well-rounded approach to education and the advancement of our world.

How to encourage diversity in STEAM in an early years setting

There are many ways to encourage diversity in STEAM in an early years setting. Some activities include:

  • Providing a diverse range of materials, books, and videos that showcase people from different backgrounds and cultures working in STEAM fields.
  • Organise field trips to local STEAM organizations to meet individuals working in STEAM and learn about the work they do.
  • Encouraging children to explore their interests and passions through hands-on projects and activities that integrate STEAM subjects.
  • Providing opportunities for children to work with others from different backgrounds, promoting teamwork and collaboration.
  • Celebrating the successes and achievements of diverse individuals in STEAM fields and showcasing their stories to inspire others. Read our blog for just a few ideas!

Diversity in STEAM is important for promoting inclusivity, equality, and a better understanding of the world. By encouraging diversity in STEAM in the early years, we can promote a more diverse and inclusive future for all.

The key is to provide opportunities for children to explore their interests and passions, work with others from different backgrounds, and see the success of diverse individuals in these fields. By doing so, we can inspire and motivate the next generation of diverse STEAM leaders and make a positive impact on the world.
