Keep your little ones entertained this summer with our floating boats craft. This activity is not only a fun craft but a great way for children to explore different scientific concepts such as materials and their properties. Encourage your little ones to try and make a few different boats using different materials and compare the results. Alternatively why not introduce a little competition amongst your little ones by tasking your class to create a boat each and see which ones survive.
This activity is also a great way to introduce the topic of upcycling and recycling with your little ones as they can test various household items to create their boats. Below we have a set of step-by-step instructions to create a boat which you can use as a guide!
1. Fancy Foil Boat

- Simply start with any leftover pieces of foil you might have
- Fold the pieces to ensure you have a floor and 4 raised sides to keep the water out. This is great for little ones to practice their fine motor skills
- Now for the sail. We used a toothpick and extra pieces of foil cut into a triangle shape
- Decorate as you like!
- Set sail on your tuff tray ocean!
2. Simple Sponge Boat
- Start with an old washing up sponge and paint and decorate as you please
- Add your sail by using toothpicks or lolly sticks
- We adding some leftover wrapping to create our polka dot sail but you could create a pirate ship by adding a skull and crossbones decoration to your sail!

We would love to see how you get on with your floating boats! Send us pictures of your masterpieces on Facebook or Instagram by tagging us or using the hashtag #ExploreWithEYR.
