Diwali is known as the Festival of Lights and is a time of year celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs. During this time, houses, shops and other public places are decorated with small oil lamps called Diyas. The Diyas are believed to represent the triumph of light over dark and good over evil and are thought to bring purity, goodness, good luck and power.
Teach your little ones about the significance of Diwali for these different cultures by creating your very own Diya lamp out of clay. The design of these little lamps can vary so encourage your little ones to express their creativity as they paint the hardened clay. Why not teach them about the origins of the Festival at the same time? Read our blog post to learn more.
Follow these simple steps to create your own Diya Lamp...
You will need:
To create your Diya Lamp:
- Firstly, take a piece of clay from the block and roll in your palms to create a ball the size of a golf ball.
- Once nice and smooth, use your thumb and push into the middle of the ball. Gently push the edges away to make a little pot and ensuring the middle is wide enough to fit a tea light
- Leave the clay to dry.
- Next, paint your pot with your favourite colour and add any decorative swirls and patterns you like
- Once the paint is dry, add PVA glue and glitter or other decorations as you wish
- Leave to dry.
- Finally, add a tea light and you have your Diya lamp!
